   Reading

Reading in our classes will consist of three things – Reading, Reading, and more Reading. We believe that the more one practices something – including reading, the better one becomes.

Through reading, and discussing a variety of reading material – both teacher and student selected – your child will learn important reading skills and strategies. Students will take part in individual, paired, and class reading assignments. Projects, reading book unit tests, and weekly vocabulary and comprehension assessments will be used to evaluate your child’s progress.

Language Arts

Language Arts consists of English, Spelling, and Writing. English will focus on skills to assist your child in speaking and writing correctly. Spelling lessons will concentrate on learning and practicing spelling rules, and learning rules that are needed for composition. Weekly spelling tests will be given each Friday.

Writing

Writing class will include formal writing assignments, using the writing process, daily journal writing, and letters through the “Wee Deliver” program.

Math

We will be using the Houghton-Mifflin program at Carver this year. Third grade students are responsible for basic multiplication facts. The sooner your child begins practicing these facts, the easier it will be when we begin working on these at school. Flash cards work well with many students! Please go over your child’s math homework with him/her each night.

Concepts

Concepts include Science, Social Studies, and Health. In Social Studies, our lessons will center around South Carolina History and communities. Our Science/Health units will focus on exploration of a variety of topics.

       Homework Policy

Homework is assigned for extra practice. Students will be given homework Monday through Thursday. The subjects may vary each night.

A school-wide program, “Reading Renaissance”, will continue to be a part of our reading program this year. Your child will be responsible for outside reading. A daily reading routine at home will probably help you and your child avoid unnecessary frustration. Also, reading logs will be checked.

Please remember that you, as parents, can be a very positive influence on your child’s attitude towards homework and test preparation!

Parent Contact

Parent contact is an important part of our classes.  We want you to feel free to contact us at any time with questions and concerns you might have.  Please call 664-8156 to schedule a conference.

Also, we will be sending Graded Work folders and a newsletter every Monday unless a holiday prohibits this.  These papers will only be a sampling of assignments completed.  Please examine your child’s work and discuss the papers with your child.  Extra study time and additional help from you may be necessary if your child has an abundance of unsatisfactory papers.  Attached to each set of papers will be a weekly progress report.  This report will inform you of your child’s behavior for the week and an update on his/her performance in Reading Renaissance.  Please make sure that you sign the progress report and return all papers the following day.  Your comments are welcomed!

Interim reports are sent home about every four and one-half weeks.  Please help us by promptly returning the parent signature portion of these reports.
