Academics R Us

Happy New Year! Welcome back to school! We hope everyone had a wonderful winter break. We had a long break and have to quickly get ourselves back in the swing of things. The 2nd nine weeks is quickly coming to an end.

We have many upcoming things to learn in the 3rd nine weeks. In ELA, we will continue learning and applying comprehension strategies. We will learn reading skills such as narrative elements, summarizing, compare/contrast, and author’s purpose. In grammar, students will study adjectives and figurative language. The students will continue to work hard in centers and small groups to get their independent practice with these strategies and skills.  In science, we will study Structures of life. We get a science kit this nine weeks so students will have plenty of hands on experience.  In math, we will study time, geometry, multiplication/division, and fractions.  Also, students are given timed tests of basic facts (goals test) that they must pass. The 3rd nine weeks goals test is multiplication 0-9. Some students still have not passes the 1st or 2nd nine weeks goals test. Please work on this at home with your child. In Social Studies, students will begin to learn about how South Carolina started to change after the war  and the Civil Rights Movement.

North Vista Elementary is a Title One school. This means that the majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch. If you would like to know more about the Title One Project at North Vista Elementary, please feel free to stop by the main office and check it out. Also, we have the Title One Parent Resource Center located in the Media center. It includes videos, books, handouts, etc.

Parent-Communication folders should be signed on a biweekly basis. These folders contain important papers and keep you informed about your child’s progress.

If you would like to OBSERVE your child’s classroom, feel free to do so at anytime. However, if you want to schedule a conference with your child’s teacher, please do so through the main office.

Thanks for all that you do!
