January’s Newsletter

We hope that
you and your family had a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. We
are sad to announce that Ms. Bullard will not be returning to North
Vista after the New Year. We would like to wish her well in her
endeavors. We are please to announce that Ms. Sharonda Daise will be
our new 5th grade teacher, taking Ms. Bullard’s place. I am
sure that we will all make Ms. Daise feel right at home.
Focus
Skills for January:
Math:
The students are wrapping up their study of Dimensional Geometry. We
have had some wonderful lessons using many different manipulatives like
Geoboards, blocks that snap together, and cutting out nets to make
three-dimensional shapes from two-dimensional shapes. We will begin
the year working with protractors for the first time to find the degree
of angles. Next, we will begin our study of Data.
Social
Studies: Fifth grade
just finished their study of World War I and will begin studying the
Roaring 20s and the Great Depression. Ask your child what happened
during the Great Depression. As always, make sure your child uses their
study guide and their notebooks to study for tests.
Science: The New Year will find the fifth grade beginning their study of
Force and Motion. We are planning many exciting lessons to reinforce
what the students will be learning while we use the District Science
Kits which will arrive January 12th. Ask your child to
define force and motion and give you an example of both.
English
Language Arts: Fifth
grade will start off the New Year by reviewing for the ELA Benchmark
Test. Students will take the Benchmarks from January 8th
through the January 12th. As always, we will continue to
improve our reading, writing, and researching skills. We will continue
using Compass Odyssey to promote a greater understanding of many aspects
of ELA. Please remember parent, we have spelling homework every night.
Make sure that your student is studying their spelling words. The
completion of homework is vital. It allows the student to practice the
concepts they learn in the classroom. Also, we will be concluding our
novel study of, The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Patterson.
The students have really enjoyed this book! Ask your child how the
story ends and what Gilly learns.

December’s Newsletter

It is so hard
to believe that Christmas is here! We have a lot of material to cover
before the Christmas break. We know that our fifth graders are up for
the challenge. We are proud of each and every one of them for the
effort they put forth!
Focus
Skills for December:
Math:
Fifth grade is working on Dimensional Geometry this month. Students
learned about congruency last week and now they are learning more about
two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. They will be creating
three-dimensional shapes from two-dimensional shapes this week. Next
week, we will be analyzing shapes to determine line symmetry and/or
rotational symmetry.
Social
Studies: Fifth grade is
now studying the United States as a World Power unit. Ask your child
who we bought Alaska from, or what annexation means. The students will
be delving into WWI and learning about the causes of the war and who the
Central and Allied Powers were. We should be completing this unit
before the Christmas break. The Unit test will be sometime the week of
December 8-12th. Make sure your child uses their study guide
and their notebooks to study for tests.
Science: Fifth graders are still covering the Landforms and Oceans unit. We
are now beginning our study of tides, waves, and the shoreline. Ask
your child what they learned about the tides and ask them to describe
the crest or the trough of a wave.
English
Language Arts: In ELA
we will be focusing on our reading and writing skills. We will be
studying author’s bias and determining fact from opinion in literature.
Each week we will have spelling and vocabulary tests. Please make sure
that your student is studying for these tests. Fifth grade continues
their novel study of The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine
Patterson. Ask your child what is happening in the story. Ask them to
describe their favorite character from the novel.
