The main focus of first grade at Royall Elementary School is to enable students to become well adjusted to the school environment, follow all class and school procedures, and develop a desire to learn in this community of learners. First graders are expected to become fluent readers, reading for a variety of purposes and a wide selection of materials. It is important for the students to become writers using proper capitalization and punctuation. Writing is done for a variety of purposes including daily journal entries and process writing. The students are encouraged to learn the 0 - 18 addition and subtraction facts. Math concepts introduced are place value, 2-digit addition and subtraction, geometry, time to the hour and half hour, measurement using standard units and metric units, and recognition of and counting coins. Health, science, and social studies concepts are integrated as often as possible with other subjects.
