Fourth grade students begin using their reading skills to learn new material and solve problems. A great deal of emphasis is placed on locating information and using graphic organizers to correlate the information into a usable format. Fourth graders read and write both formally and for pleasure. They are also required to master all math facts, name and locate all fifty states, and write an original book by the end of the year. Fourth graders enjoy special projects and activities related to the study of the early United States in Social Studies and the study of weather and environments in Science. They also enjoy working with Royall's physical education, art, music, and computer lab teachers. All fourth graders participate in the Reading Renaissance Program, which fosters a lifelong love of reading.
