           MISSION

The mission of Greenwood Elementary School is to prepare students to be responsible, productive citizens who are life-long learners while providing a safe and secure learning environment.

_________________________________________________________

DISCIPLINE

We believe that students learn best in an orderly, safe environment.  We believe that we all must work together to insure this type of atmosphere for students.  Our discipline policy at Greenwood is based on the Florence District One Pupil Code (Blue Book).  Parents, we urge you to review the following limits with your child as well as the school rules listed below.

No one has the right to:

1.        Injure him/herself or others.

2.        Discriminate against others.

3.        Damage or destroy materials.

4.        Steal from others.

5.        Impose on others.

6.        Interfere with the learning of others.

7.        Misrepresent to others.

The following rules also apply to students at Greenwood:

1.        Chewing gum is not allowed.

2.        Trading food or possessions is not allowed.

3.        No one may sell any item to others at school.

4.        Hats are not to be worn at school.

5.        Toys and other distractions including but not limited to cell phones, video games, MP3 players, iPods, CD players, and trading cards are not allowed at school.

To insure a pleasant learning atmosphere, we have developed a school plan for handling rule violations.

Infractions such as fighting, blatant disrespect, or bullying may result in an immediate office referral.

Conduct marks will be given for minor violations that continue after a verbal warning. Parent notification will be given for all conduct marks. Parent signature is required for each conduct mark.

1.        First conduct mark – warning

2.        Second conduct mark – loss of recess and/or silent lunch

3.        Third conduct mark - loss of recess and/or silent lunch

4.        Fourth conduct mark - discipline referral to office/copy of discipline referral sent to parent/ overnight suspension

Consequences for subsequent office referrals are as follows:

Second Discipline Referral – In-School Suspension (ISS) for one day (ISS includes completing classroom assignments under the supervision of the ISS supervisor and community service, ie helping to keep our school campus attractive.

Third Discipline Referral - In-School Suspension for two days

Fourth or more Discipline Referrals – Out of School Suspension (OSS) for 1 - 3 days/parent conference required for reinstatement. Parent option to shadow may be substituted for OSS at the principal’s discretion.

Teachers will review these rules with students often.  It is imperative that we work together to promote good behavior at school.  If you have concerns about discipline, please contact your child’s teacher.  Please join us as we help your child become responsible for his/her behavior.

SCHOOL HOURS

Students at Greenwood begin their day promptly at 7:40 a.m. Adult supervision begins at 7:00 a.m., therefore students are not to be brought to school before this time. Please make every effort to have your child at school on time.  Students are marked tardy if they arrive at their classroom after 7:50am. Excessive tardies will lead to disciplinary action as outlined in the Blue Book. The school day ends at 2:10 p.m.

______________________________________________________

ARRIVAL

For the safety of all of our children, it is essential that everyone abide by our arrival procedures. Car riders are to be dropped off at the rear of the building. Under no circumstances should students be dropped off in the faculty/visitor parking lot. Bus riders will be dropped off at the front porch.

______________________________________________________

DISMISSAL

Students, who ride in cars, ride a bike, or walk will be dismissed at 2:10 p.m.  Car riders will report to the covered walkway at the rear of the building and will be loaded by staff members.  Parents who are picking up students should get in the car line and remain there until students are loaded. Do not pull around cars who are still waiting for students.   Parents are asked to discuss this with your child to insure their safety during dismissal time. Parents are asked to place their child/children’s name and grade in the left corner of windshield to help place students in the correct vehicle in a timely manner.   Car rider supervision ends at 2:30pm each day. Please make sure your child is picked up prior to this time.  Parents picking up students after this time will be required to sign the students out in the office and may be required to participate in a parent-administrator conference.

______________________________________________________

EARLY SIGN-OUT

Every hour of every school day is important to your child’s education.  Signing students out early should be avoided since learning time is lost. It also causes the entire class to be interrupted.  If it is absolutely necessary for your child to be dismissed early, the parent must sign the child out from the main office not later than 1:30pm – students may not be signed out after this time. Teachers cannot release a student from class without office authorization.

CAFETERIA

2.        Students will enter the cafeteria in a quiet manner and sit in assigned areas.

3.        Students will not throw food.

4.        Students will return trays one at a time.

Faculty members reserve the right to place students on silent breakfast/lunch.

CHANGES OF ADDRESS

Please notify us immediately if your address or telephone number changes. We must be able to reach you in an emergency situation.

WITHDRAWAL OF STUDENTS

If you are moving and are withdrawing a child from Greenwood, please notify us as soon as possible.  We need at least three days to complete the required paperwork that will assist you as you enroll at your new school.

_________________________________________________________

SCHOOL BUSES

Riding the bus is a privilege extended to our students whose permanent address is located along the bus route. Bus riders are expected to obey the bus rules at all times. The driver is in charge and students are expected to listen and follow the directions given by the driver.  Any behavior that creates a disturbance or interferes with the safe operation of the bus will be in violation of school rules and will be dealt with according to the Discipline Code (Blue Book).  Students may not change buses or ride a different bus without a written request from a parent and the approval of the principal.

TRANSPORTATION CHANGES

Please make every effort to make arrangements for transportation before your child comes to school.  Students should know how they are going to get home each day.  Students are not permitted to alter the way they get home (walking route, car, bus) unless the teacher has written request/permission from the parent. We realize that emergencies do arise and changes sometimes need to be made.  In the case of an emergency, please call the school office before 1:30 p.m.

VISITING THE SCHOOL

We are proud of our school and invite you to visit us anytime. To insure the safety of everyone at Greenwood, we ask that all visitors report to the main office to sign in and receive a visitor’s sticker. All classroom visits must be approved by the principal.  Our school is a public facility and is easily accessible.  We try to be on the lookout for unwanted visitors and we request your assistance in maintaining security.  Please do not be offended if someone asks you if you need help or wants to know why you are in the building - we are trying to protect YOUR children.

We must not let visits interfere with the education of our students. Preschool children may not accompany parents for classroom visits to insure that the instructional process is not interrupted. Visitors are asked to turn off cell phones before entering the building and to adhere to our school wide dress code. It is important for everyone in the school community to model our school rules, procedures and policies. Visitors are not to stand in the hallways or other locations around the building before, during or after school. If a teacher conference is desired, please schedule this in advance. Classroom teachers are not permitted to stop instruction to conference with visitors.

_________________________________________________________

SCHOOL PHONES

Students will be allowed to use school telephones only in case of an emergency.  Forgotten homework, signed papers, projects, misplaced library books, etc. are not considered to be emergencies.  Please help us help your child learn to be responsible for his/her assignments, after-school arrangements, etc.

_________________________________________________________

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSING

If it becomes necessary to dismiss school early or not to have school because of weather conditions or other emergency situations, the local radio and TV stations will be notified. Up to date school information can also be found on our school district’s website at www.fsd1.org.  Parents are asked to rely on the local media for information and NOT to call the school.  Such calls tie up our phone lines and make it impossible for us to receive critical information and instructions from the district office or from other agencies that may be trying to help us.

GREENWOOD ASSOCIATION OF PARENTS AND TEACHERS  (APT)

All parents are invited and encouraged to become members of the APT.  The Greenwood APT is an auxiliary organization that supports our school in many ways.  We are very fortunate to have a large number of interested and active parents who serve our school through a variety of programs.  The APT offers four levels of membership - individual, $1.00; family, $5.00; Silver, $10.00; and Gold, $25.00.  APT volunteers are needed as room parents, volunteer readers, computer assistants, chaperones, spruce up committees, etc.  If you are interested, please fill out a membership application and return it to the school office.  We need YOU to help make Greenwood an even better place to learn!!

We cannot keep seriously ill or contagious students at school. Please remember to inform us if your child has a medical problem or condition that may affect him/her at school.

______________________________________________________

HEALTH ROOM

We are fortunate to have a full-time nurse on staff to serve our students. Students reporting to the health room must have a referral completed by a staff member. Students will not be referred to the health room after 1:30pm unless there is a serious health issue or emergency. The phone in the health room may not be used for calls regarding forgotten supplies or materials, i.e. lunch money, homework, books, projects, etc.

2.        School property will not be abused, defaced, or damaged by students.

3.        Restroom breaks are part of the daily schedule for each class. A medical excuse must be on file for students who have physical conditions that require regular restroom breaks beyond the typical daily schedule.

MAP TESTING

In order to more effectively monitor student learning, Florence School District One has implemented the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing program. This program is designed to determine your child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth from year to year in the areas of mathematics, reading and language usage. All students in grades 2-6 will take MAP tests on the computer.  This allows schools and teachers to more quickly receive detailed, accurate information about your child’s academic growth.  We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. Partnering to help kids learn, parents and teachers can have a profound positive effect on the lives of our children.

PARENT -TEACHER COMMUNICATION

Communication between parents and teachers is an essential part of the educational program at Greenwood.  We want to try to do everything possible to promote positive interaction between parents and teachers.  Each student is issued an agenda. Parents are asked to initial their child’s agenda daily. You will be contacted if your child's teacher feels the need to share a concern, ask a question, or to give you some good news.  If you want to ask a question, share a concern, or give us some good news, we hope that you will feel free to call - our number is 664-8451.

______________________________________________________

WORK SAMPLE FOLDERS

We believe that it is important for parents to have the opportunity to be a part of their child's academic progress.  To help us to achieve this goal, samples of your child's work will be sent home in a folder on Tuesday of each week. We ask that you take the time to review the contents of her/his folder and return it to school according to the teacher's instructions.  If you have questions or concerns after reviewing your child's weekly samples, please contact her/his teacher.
