Autism Characteristics

  • A  aloofness; appear to not be listening; answering complex questions is difficult; almost always…visual learners

  • U unique tone/rhythm of speaking; usually like routines/ rituals/sameness; unbelievable skills; unable to make needs/wants known

  • T trouble relating to people/objects; Talk preservative; Third most common disability worldwide; think in pictures, not words; tremendous memories

  • I inappropriate emotional responses; incidence is 1 in 150; intense interests; inclusion helps; imitate what you say

  • S symptoms vary (if you have met one child with autism…..you have met ONE child with autism); show you things through behavior; self-stimulatory behaviors; spectrum disorder; social age is 2/3 chronological age; sensory overload

  • M make inappropriate comments….no social filter; much more common in males; meticulous in their work; minds are tuned in to the concrete; motivated by unusual things
