McLaurin Elementary Red Ribbon Week

October 22-26, 2007

“Look at Me: I’m Drug Free”

Red Ribbon Week came into existence out of the tragic death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent EnriqaueKikiCamarena.  In 1985, Camarena was killed by drug traffickers in Mexico.  Friends in his hometown of Calexico, California started a movement to honor him and stop the destruction caused by drugs.    In 1988, the U.S. Congress officially proclaimed Red Ribbon Week.  We have planned the following activities for Red Ribbon Week.  Please encourage your student(s) to be a part of these activities.

Thanks for your support.

Monday – “Look at Me: I’m Drug Free”   Have each student sign the poster and place it outside the classroom.

Tuesday – “Drugs Give me the Blues” – wear blue jeans or something blue.  Write/draw about “Look at Me: I’m Drug Free”.

Wednesday – “Drugs and I don’t Mix” – students wear mismatched socks. Read and write about what you enjoy doing.

Thursday – “Hats off to me I’m Drug Free”– students/staff wear hats of their favorite team. Principals decide when/where hats are permissible to wear in the building.

Also, wear red day.

Friday – “Win the Race for Life: Live Drug Free” - Students show their team spirit or school spirit by wearing a shirt with their favorite team/school on it.

Other activities that can be done include: read the *Red Ribbon Story; do a journal entry; draw a picture of alternatives to drugs.

I have a copy of the Red Ribbon Story and I think there is a copy in the Media Center if you would like to read it to your class.
