We’d like to thank all of those who came out for Parent Orientation on August 21st.  We considered it a huge success with fifteen people attending!  Way to go Fifth-grade! It was nice meeting those who came. For those who were unable to attend, we hope to meet with you in the near future.  You are always welcome in our classroom.  We’re excited about working with you and your child this year.

·       In Social Studies, we’ll continue to learn about Reconstruction and begin our study on Westward Expansion.

·       We have begun our study of decimals and place value.  We will have a Math Unit Test on September 15th .

·       In English Language Arts, we are learning how to effectively use “Thinking Maps” to help organize our thoughts and ideas which will help with the writing process and all aspects of learning.  We are practicing more complex reading and writing skills.

Here are some helpful tips to help your child succeed:

                                                     i.      Practice Basic Math Facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)  This could be a fun activity using flashcards.

ii.      Make sure that your child reads at least thirty minutes a day.

iii.      Ask your child about Homework-ask them to explain it to you.

iv.      Begin studying for Spelling test (which are on Fridays) on Monday evening.

                                                     v.      Ask your child questions from their Study Guides (these will be sent out soon in Social Studies and Science)
