Welcome to South Florence High School
Foundational Studies.
 Freshman Academy
Using a federal grant for start-up funds,
our school initiated a Freshman Academy at South Florence for
the 05-06 school year. The goal behind creating this small
learning community was to support students in order to improve
student promotion and graduation rates and decrease discipline
problems and drop-out rates. In addition to the funds providing
for a coordinator position, they also provide for additional
instructional supplies and professional development for
teachers.
The Freshman Academy incorporates all the
first-time freshman into one of three teams. Students in a
particular team are taught by all the same core-area subject
teachers. The teachers meet weekly to coordinate curriculum,
discuss student issues, and share student work.
After two successful years implementing the
Freshman Academy, South Florence has extended its Smaller
Learning Community (SLC) concept this year. Our goal in
expanding the concept of Smaller Learning Communities is to
increase student success by facilitating better collaboration
among students, parents, teachers, and curriculum. We now have
tenth through twelfth graders organized by career schools. The
three career schools are the School of Health, Education and
Human Services; School of Business, Marketing, Finance, and
Information Technology; and School of Engineering,
Manufacturing, Science, and Industrial Technology. Each school
has its own administrator, guidance counselor, and support
staff.

concept, please contact Carol Hill, SLC Coordinator at 664-8190,
