The 2007-2008 school year at South Florence High School was
filled with success as the school, students and faculty
members received numerous awards and participated in a host
of educational and extra-curricular events and activities.
We embraced our Good/Excellent report card rating from the
2006-2007 school year as a tribute to the hard work that our
parents, business and community partners, and faculty
members invested into the South Florence students. We
celebrated our commitment to excellence as we received
recognition as a 2008 Red Carpet School.
SFHS’s class of 2008 continued our school’s tradition of
academic excellence by earning over $3,310,300 in
scholarship offers to include eight Palmetto Fellows
recipients, one recipient of the SC Association of Counties
2008 Presidential Scholarship, and one NASSP Leadership
Award and Scholarship recipient. Of the 2008 graduating
class, 51% worked diligently throughout their high school
careers to obtain single cord (97), double cord (23) and
Board of Trustee (15) honors.
Our students not only excelled academically; our athletic
department worked with over 400 SF students in junior
varsity and varsity sports to include volleyball, football,
cross country, swimming, tennis, basketball, cheerleading,
golf, track, soccer, softball, and baseball. Ten SF
students were awarded athletic scholarships enabling them to
participate in collegiate sports and continue their
education. Twelve of the eighteen varsity teams advanced to
the playoffs with boy’s swimming and girl’s softball wining
regional championships. Additionally, a SF student was
named the Florence School District One Female Athlete of the
Year award. SF students also participated in a variety of
non-athletic activities to include NHS, Marching Band,
Spanish Club, Chinese Club, and Step Team.
SFHS continued its work with HSTW and Small Learning
Community initiatives working to reshape our school’s
culture as we endeavor to create professional learning
communities designed to support student and staff learning.
Students interacted with the business community through job
shadowing, internships and mentorships secured by our Career
Development Facilitators and School-to-Work Counselor.
Sixty seniors participated in the HSTW Senior Assessment, of
which, ten were honored with Certificates of Excellence for
their high achievement. Our On-Line Learning Laboratory
allowed students to recover over 250 course credits.
Our School Improvement Council (SIC) is proud of the many
achievements of the students, faculty, and staff. We desire
to foster a relationship with all stakeholders to increase
the number of students who graduate high school within four
years, and to increase student achievement on standardized
tests. We continue to research and implement best practices
and strategies in an effort to support and improve teaching
and learning and increase home-to-school communication.
