Message from the
Principal
Dear Students and Parents,
It is my pleasure to
welcome you back to Wallace Gregg. We
pride ourselves in providing opportunities for your child to be academically
successful.
Providing a strong academic
program has always been a vital part of Wallace Gregg.
We encourage students to
first focus on their academics, then to participate in student activities that
are available to them.
Parental support is crucial
to the success of our students. Without
this support, students do not have a solid foundation. We invite parents into the school for
visitations, meetings, and/ or activities.
Volunteers are always welcome to assist within classrooms and for
various committee work.
Please take the time to
read through this handbook to help you understand the procedures of the
school. If you have any questions or do
not understand a portion of the handbook, please do not hesitate to contact the
school.
Sincerely,
Gloria Muldrow
Principal

DISMISSAL

ATTENDANCE
All students are expected
to be in attendance each day unless they are ill or a family emergency
arises. Please remember that a written
note explaining any absence is required within
three days. Our district’s
attendance policy can be confusing, so please review it carefully. If you have questions, please contact our
attendance clerk.
MEDICATION
If your child is to receive
medication while at school, we must have the following on
file in the school office:
1. A signed and dated request by the parent authorizing
us to give the medication.
2. A signed and dated statement from your child’s doctor
which contains the
name
of the medicine, the dosage, and the times it is to be given. The medicine must be in a properly labeled
bottle.
For your child’s protection
and our own, we are not allowed to give any medication
(prescription
or non-prescription) unless these procedures have been followed.
ILL CHILDREN
If your child becomes ill
or is injured at school, we will contact you.
If we cannot reach you, and the illness or injury seems serious, we will
use the emergency information that you have provided to us.
We usually operate under a
“better safe than sorry” philosophy in regard to children’s complaints. We will always try to contact you if your
child has a fever. Keep in mind, we
cannot keep children at school who are seriously ill or have contagious
conditions.
HEALTH PROBLEMS
Please inform the school if
your child has any special medical problems such as allergies, diabetes, poor
vision or hearing, or any other condition which may require special
attention. Note: This information should be included on the
Emergency Card you completed at registration.
HOMEWORK
Wallace Gregg teachers will
assign homework if and when they believe it is needed to provide practice or
enrichment. Students will be responsible
for writing down homework assignments and for completing their assignments
neatly, accurately and on time. Homework
is to be of the same quality as class work.
Parents are asked to keep
in mind that homework is designed to be done by students.
Feel free to review completed
assignments for neatness and accuracy, but resist the temptation to assume the
responsibility for the completion of your child’s homework. We will not ask your child to do something
that we do not feel he/she is capable of doing!
If your child repeatedly has difficulty completing homework assignments,
please notify his/her teacher for assistance,
Rolling Book Bags
Students at Wallace Gregg
are not allowed to bring rolling book bags to school. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
LOST AND FOUND
Items found at school are
placed in the “Lost and Found” box located in the book room. We strongly encourage you to have your
child’s name on lunch boxes, jackets, notebooks, hats, mittens, etc. We collect hundreds of very nice items each
year that are not labeled. If a name is
inside, we can be sure the item is returned to its rightful owner. Items from our “Lost and Found” that are not
claimed in a reasonable length of time are donated to local charities.
DISCIPLINE
It is necessary for
children to develop self discipline in order to further their learning. Wallace Gregg students are expected to
conduct themselves in an appropriate manner at all times. Discipline at our school is based on Florence
School District One’s Discipline Code (contained in the “Blue Book”.) Your child will receive a “Blue Book” during
the first few days of school. Please
review this with him/her.
The “limits” at Wallace
Gregg are as follows:
No one has the right to:
1. Physically injure himself/herself
or others or to threaten physical injury to another
2.
Discriminate against others
3. Damage
and/or destroy materials
4. Steal from
others
5. Impose on others
6. Interfere
with the learning of others
7. Misrepresent
to others (lying, cheating, etc.)
In addition, the following
rules apply:
1. No hats or headgear may be worn in the
building.
2. Chewing gum is prohibited at school and all
school events.
3. Candy and other snacks may be eaten at recess
only.
4. Bottled drinks may not be brought to school.
5. Littering is not allowed.
6. No student is allowed to trade or sell
his/her possessions.
7. No toys are electronic devices of any kind
may be brought to school.
8. At all times,
students will treat staff members and other students with respect.
Violations of the
discipline code or the failure to follow our school’s procedures will result in
disciplinary action.
SIGNING YOUR CHILD OUT
Parents are asked to
schedule their child’s doctor and dental appointments after school hours. If this is not possible, please send a note
to your child’s teacher stating the time that you will pick him/her up. In most cases, this will allow your child to
be in the office waiting for you and will eliminate the need to interrupt
classroom instruction. Students are not
to be signed out after
WITHDRAWAL OF STUDENTS
If you are moving and are
withdrawing your child from Wallace Gregg, please notify the school office
several days in advance. This will give
us the time necessary to complete the paperwork required. Also, please make sure that your child turns
in all textbooks and library books.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS/PHONE NUMBER
It is imperative that we have
accurate and current information regarding your address and phone number. Please notify your child’s teacher and the
school office if you change your address or telephone numbers (work or home)
during the school year. Also, please
inform us if there are changes in the information for those people who you have
asked us to notify in an emergency situation if we are unable to reach you.
BAD WEATHER PROCEDURES
If it is necessary to
dismiss school early or not have school because of bad weather, parents are
asked to rely on local radio and TV stations regarding closing times, etc. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL TO OBTAIN
CLOSING INFORMATION! Doing so ties up
our phone lines and makes it difficult for us to get critical information
regarding dismissal procedures.
TRANSPORTATION CHANGES
Please make every effort to
settle after-school arrangements and transportation concerns before your child
comes to school. If changes must be
made, please notify the school office prior to
BUSES
Students who are bus riders
are given a bus assignment designated by color.
Students are to ride their assigned bus to and from school. No changes in buses may be made without a
written request from a parent and the approval of the principal.
Riding the bus is a
privilege extended to students and is contingent on their good behavior. To ensure a safe environment on each bus, the
school fully supports the driver in establishing and enforcing safe bus riding
habits.
