Wilson High School
Home of the Tigers

Welcome to the Wilson High School Media Center, where you'll find everything you need to fill your research and general information needs, at school or online.

The mission of the school library media program is to ensure access to the ideas of the past, the concepts of the present, and the possibilities of the future so that members of the school community will become effective users of ideas and information in the learning process.

Our goal is to ensure that students graduate as competent and ethical users of information, with strong intellectual curiosity and a life-long love of reading.

Whether you want the latest SAT information, an article for that research paper, or a great read for the weekend, the Wilson Media Center can help!

Academic Achievement

The new instruction lab with 32 desktop computers, a portable screen and LCD projector in the Media Center allows us (librarians) to offer classes on how to do research such as accessing online sources, evaluating websites, and citing sources.  Teachers report that their students who have taken  these classes use a greater variety of sources for their assignments and correctly cite their courses.

Innovative Strategies

We built up non-fiction collection in many areas with readable books.  This includes graphic novels, which cover history, science, etc. in a visual way that interests students.  We give book talks on our non-fiction collection including video and Photostory booktalks.

We offer computerized  scavenger hunts to demonstrate some of the new databases purchase with grant money, such as the Literary Reference Center.

Effective Intervention(s) in areas of health, and social services :

The new non-fiction purchase includes self-help and how-to books in the areas of motivation, study skills, hobbies, dating, new technologies, character education,  personal finance and teen health issues.  We also have up-to-date books and a virtual reference collection that makes available information on all topics, including major social issues such as poverty, capital punishment, global warming, etc. The virtual collection includes an electronic version of the college search materials and an up-to date multivolume work on diseases.

Growth and success of the program .

Our students are enthusiastically taking advantage of the extra hours that the media center is open.  More classes are being scheduled because of the new instruction lab and we have mo re opportunities to collaborate with teachers.
