At its regular December  meeting on Thursday, the Florence One Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Dr. Dan Strickland as Interim Superintendent of Florence School District One effective January 2018.

“Each of the interviewees that the South Carolina School Boards Association brought to the table offered their own set of impressive skills and experiences, but ultimately as the Board evaluated its goals for the second half of the 2017-18 school year, Dr. Strickland’s name rose to the top,” said Florence School District One School Board Chairman Barry Townsend.

Townsend also said the Board identified continuity for its new, innovative, academic programs, annual budget and personnel processes as particular areas of focus.   “Dr. Strickland’s familiarity with Florence School District One and its programs—having served as Superintendent in a neighboring district as recently as last year—in combination with his administrative and leadership experience, led us to offer him the position of  Interim Superintendent. We anticipate a smooth transition and look forward to working with Dr. Strickland for the remainder of the academic year, “he added.

Dr. Strickland brings leadership capacity as an experienced school administrator and superintendent to Florence School District One. From 2005-2011, he served as Superintendent of Columbus County Schools in Whiteville, North Carolina; from 2011-2016 he served as Superintendent of Marion County Schools in Marion, South Carolina.

Dr. Strickland academically prepared himself in the field of education with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Sciences from Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, and Certification in Visual Arts at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.  He received a Master of Arts in Education Administration and Supervision from the University of North Carolina, Pembroke; an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from East Carolina University; and a Doctorate of Education in Administration and Supervision from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Dr. Strickland began his career in public education as a high school social studies/visual arts teacher in Hallsboro, North Carolina.  He later served in the capacities of Director of Human Resources, Assistant Superintendent, and Associate Superintendent--all in Columbus County Schools (Whiteville).

Among awards received by Dr. Strickland during his tenure as superintendent are the North Carolina Association of Office Personnel’s Administrator of the Year and the National School Board Association’s National Magna Award.

Strickland and his wife Gay have two grown daughters, Elizabeth and Paige.   They are also grandparents of one grandson.
