Bridging the Divide

Southside Middle School and South Florence High School in collaboration with the Florence School District One Technology Department are laying the framework and foundation to bridge the Digital Divide in Florence School District One.  Through the allocation of received grant funds Chromebooks are being placed into the hands of the students at Southside Middle and South Florence High School.  A Chromebook is a lightweight, fast, computer device that uses the Chrome operating system.  Students will pay a $30.00 annual fee for the use of the device which remains FSD1 property.  Students in these schools will not only have access to their device during the school day, but they will also have them for home use during the school year.  The 1:1 Initiative will allow staff and students to utilize instructional tools designed for 21st Century classrooms such as online textbooks, safe research databases, and Google Apps for Education which digitally brings the classroom to a student’s fingertips.  Students in both schools are also receiving training on the practices of good Digital Citizenship and Internet safety.    The 1:1 Initiative will open new doors to educational strategies and practices while giving students the technological skills needed to advance in 21st Century colleges and careers.  For more information, please visit the school websites which have a wealth of information about the implementation of the initiative including a Frequently Asked Questions section, or contact the schools directly.  Please see the information below for roll out dates and procedures for each school.

Southside Middle School Roll Out

Roll Out Date:       January 19, 2017

Parent Information Session:              January 12, 2017, 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Gym

At Southside Middle School the 1:1 program will include students who are currently in grades 7-8.  In order for a Southside Middle student to receive their Chromebook a parent or guardian must be in attendance to a Parent Information Session.  Students are encouraged to attend as well.  Forms are available on the Southside Middle School Webpage and at the Parent Information session.  Completion of these forms prior to the roll out date will save a great deal of time.  Staff will be prepared to collect technology fees in the form of cash, check, or credit/debit card during the information session as well.  Please contact the school at 843-664-8467 or visit the school webpage https://www.fsd1.org/schools/southside for additional details and to sign up for the Parent Information Session.

South Florence High School Roll Out

Roll Out Date: January 26, 2017

Parent Information and Distribution Session: January 26, 2017 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

At South Florence High School students in all grades, 9-12, will be included in the 1:1 Initiative.  In order for a student at South Florence to receive their Chromebook a parent or guardian must attend the information session which offers training on the devices as well as the opportunity to pay for the technology fee in the form of cash, check, or credit/debit card.  Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. to those in attendance who have completed the distribution process.  Please contact the school at 843-664-8190 or visit the school webpage https://www.fsd1.org/schools/southflorence for more information.
